Community Health Worker (CHW) Training

In our healthcare program the community Health Worker (CHW) training was crafted to plug you directly into the most relevant techniques and practices in the industry. The school rewires your mind to take on the exciting challenges of a career in healthcare. This hands-on-training course is designed to teach students CPR, medical documentation, health education and other industry practices.The relationships formed with your fellow students, industry mentors, and guest speakers provide you an invaluable network of passionate, diverse healthcare allies to call upon throughout your career.

What does a Community Health Worker do?
Community Health Workers are frontline public health workers who have a close understanding of the community they serve. This trusting relationship enables them to serve as a liaison between health and social services and the clients they serve. The goal is to facilitate access to services and improve the quality and cultural competence of service delivery. In addition to becoming a CHW, you will be trained as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) as well. A CNA is a person who assists patients with healthcare needs and cares for a patient who is ill or recovering from a surgery or disease. These combined teachings will give you step-up in the medical field.
The course is 20 weeks that consists of two phases

Program starts every 10 weeks
Internship included with program
Class schedule is Mon-Fri 8:30 am -2:50 pm
CHW Essential Duties
- Create connections between vulnerable populations and the healthcare system
- Coordination of care transitions for clients
- Assist clients with enrollment in programs and benefits for which they are eligible
- Encourage cultural competence among healthcare professionals serving vulnerable populations
- Advocate for vulnerable populations within the healthcare system and the community at large
- Resource navigation and referrals

Why should you enroll at Summit?
Students come to our school from different backgrounds with varying levels of experience. Phase 1 is our way of ensuring everyone shows up to the first day of in-class instruction ready to speak the same language and successfully learn together. You’ll ramp up your classroom experience over 10 weeks. You’ll learn variety of hard skills that included Microsoft Office, HIPAA and medical terminology.
You’ll also receive soft skills like communication, interview techniques and cultural competency. You will even start to build camaraderie with your peers through study sessions.

DEVELOPING YOUR SKILLS
Weeks 11-20 is where we build on the foundational skills you learned in Phase 1. This part of the program is designed to challenge students with a higher degree of difficulty in the healthcare industry. Part of the Phase 2 training, is obtaining your CNA through the Red Cross.
You will gain a deeper understanding of the healthcare industry and practical experience with your hands-on training internship.

We connects students with employers searching for fresh talent, but we don’t send you in unprepared. We’ll work with you to build a resume and a portfolio of work that you can show off with pride. You’ll receive coaching on interviewing strategies from your instructors as well as actionable feedback from industry recruiters and local hiring managers who spend time with you on mock interview days. Our career services team are always connecting job seekers and alumni with fresh opportunities.

Success after may sometimes depends more on who you know than what you know. Through our career coach program we introduce you to smart, supportive professionals from the Twin Cities community. During your time at Summit you wll meet with working professionals (including Summit alum who understands exactly the rigors and rewards of your education).
The culmination of all this preparation are the career fairs, a remarkable opportunity to interview with multiple employers excited and eager to speak with you. Our huge network of employers means there are always companies ready to talk to you about open positions. Not every student lands their first breakthrough connections from a career fair, but every graduate benefits by shaking off their entry-level interviewing butterflies and gaining confidence in speaking about themselves and their portfolios.

You will have NO OUT-OF-POCKET expenses to cover tuition and no extra fees to pay. Our financial aid office is committed to administering gift aid to ensure that your tuition is covered at NO-OUT-OF-POCKET expense to you. As an institution, we do not participate in the Federal and State Student Loan programs, so there are NO LOANS TO PAY BACK.
