A new program created by Summit Academy OIC and Atomic Data will strive to address the workforce shortage and lack of diversity in the Twin Cities information-technology sector.

The two organizations announced on Wednesday the creation of a program called “Summit Tech,” funded by Atomic Data with a matching grant of $191,604 from the Minnesota Job Skills Partnership Board.

The program offers two 20-week training programs that will prepare people to work as a service desk technician or a network operations center technician. About 50 people will be trained in the first year, with 35 graduates expected due to an anticipated 75 percent retention rate. Of those, 30 graduates will be qualified to work at Atomic Data, according to a news release.

Summit Academy OIC is based in North Minneapolis and trains low-income people of color who need long-term employment, mostly in the construction and health care industries.

Minneapolis-based Atomic Data provides data hosting, management and other IT services. The company was a Business Journal Fast 50 Award winner in 2017 with more than 49 percent revenue growth from 2014 to 2016 and nearly $25 million in revenue in 2016.

“With our region facing IT worker shortages, we have an incredible opportunity to train people for good, long-term career opportunities and bring diversity to the IT workforce,” said Summit Academy President & CEO Louis King in a news release. “We appreciate the support from the Minnesota Job Skills Partnership Board and we’re excited to be partnering with Atomic Data on this important venture.”
