Community Healthcare Worker

How did you hear about Summit?
I heard it through word of mouth at church.

What program did you study at Summit & why?
The Community Health Worker program because I want to be a Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselor. I thought this program would be a great way to get the experience I need.

What was your life like before starting Summit?
I worked for a temp agency where I called people who didn’t want to be called and asked them a survey that they did not want to answer. Every night it reminded me that I was hungry for an opportunity because I was bored at that job. I was on a journey to find me and Summit helped me find that.

What is the most important skill you learned?
Staying consistent and organized, but mostly not letting things distract me from getting my work done.

Who is your current employer/job title?
I am a Community Health Worker at Northpoint Health and Wellness in Minneapolis.

What do you like about your current job?
Assisting those who have been impacted by hardships.

What are your career goals?
I want to be a Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselor because I am an alcoholic. When I was in treatment, an intern encouraged me to follow this path as he thought when I spoke [that] I had really good things to say. After years went by and a few jobs later, I was at a crossroads. That conversation came back to me and the next day I signed up for Summit to take this path.

How did attending Summit Academy make you feel?
It made me feel smart again. When you come to a place like Summit and your skills are being used at a new level, it is invigorating and inspiring. Once the grades started rolling in, it got my hope and belief going again.

How has your experience changed you?
Learning how to stay focused and maintain my attitude through life.

What advice do you have for those interested in Summit Academy?
Do it! Especially if you are not working currently or wondering what’s next, look into the programs offered. At Summit, it is no cost to you and once you are done, it is a straight shot into starting your career.
